Sustainable Energy Day in Rustavi

On 12 of June, 2016 the Municipality of the Rustavi City has celebrated the Sustainable Energy Day within the framework of the EU Sustainable Energy Week. Actually event has been carried out by the Rustavi City Municipality, together with the “Sustainable Development and Policy (SDAP) Center”. The “Energy Efficiency Center Georgia” also participated in this event. There have been organized and conducted various events in the Rustavi Central Park, devoted to sustainable energy (Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Technologies) issues.

The traditional bicycle marathon, youth photo exhibition and children’s drawings exhibition together with the street art activities arrangements took place.. The director of the Sustainable Development and Policy (SDAP) Center, Karine Melikidze, made the presentation of the EU granted project – “Retrofitting 3 kindergartens in Rustavi City in order to achieve high energy efficiency standards and greenhouse emission reduction”.

It should be noted, that this project is focused on implementation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plans (SEAPs) under the Covenant of Mayors and is mainly financed by the European Union under the CoMDeP (Covenant of Mayors Demonstration Projects) program.

The Rustavi City Municipality contributes 20.06% of the total project budget, however 79. 94% is share of the EU Commission. The project aims at rehabilitation of 3 kindergarten buildings (#6, #40, #41) in Rustavi, with implementation of modern energy efficient measures and installation of renewable energy technologies. It will help local authorities to target energy efficiency, enhance energy security and economic growth.

During this event the first Deputy Mayor of Rustavi –Mr. Nodar Sherozia and Deputy Governor of Kvemo Kartli – Mr. Kakhaber Gugeshashvili awarded all event participants with special gifts and certificates.

Rustavi as the signatory city of Covenant of Mayors has commitments to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% for 2020 on its territory and also introduce the renewable energy and energy efficient technologies in its current social and economic development practices.

Starting from 2011, the different events have been organized annually in the Rustavi City oriented on rising public awareness of the local population towards energy efficiency.
